Open Art is about freedom - the freedom to express whatever you feel. We wanted the women to feel part of how the project is documented, so they were given cameras to record their own personal experience of rehearsals, their lives at this point, and each other.

During the 2014 workshops we explored ways of revealing identity in ways other than the traditional portraits some are uncomfortable with, as well as discovering new ways to visualise the themes of the play. Our discussions were playful, although editing was sometimes intense - we were all aware of the power of photography not only to tell stories but also to trigger memories. We used all kinds of cameras - digital, analogue and Polaroid, all with their own particular quality to communicate the many layers of this project. The program was curated and managed by London-based photographer Susannah Baker-Smith.
